BETHLEHEM — Apalachee snapped a 14-game winless streak Friday night rallying for a thrilling 14-13 victory over Walnut Grove.
It was the first win for the Wildcats (1-2-1) since beating Cedar Shoals 28-17 in the ninth game of the 2014 season.
Apalachee actually grabbed the lead first getting a 96-yard touchdown run from Stephen Massillon with just under a minute left in the first quarter. But the extra point was no good for a 6-0 lead.
Walnut Grove answered on its next drive with Dashun Smith scoring on a 15-yard touchdown run and getting a successful point after for a 7-6 lead early in the second quarter.
It would stay that until the fourth quarter. Walnut Grove pushed its lead to 13-6 on a 44-yard pass from Gunner Logan yo Mikal Baker with nine minutes left in the game. But the Warriors missed the extra point and that would loom large.
Apalachee never quit, however. The Wildcats got a 2-yard touchdown run from Ryan Miller with two minutes left and then Ethan Morris added a two-point conversion run to give them a 14-13 lead.
The Wildcats defense then held off a last-ditch drive by the Warriors to preserve the win.
