Forsyth County opens new 2.8 mile stretch of Big Creek Greenway

A new 2.8 mile stretch of the Big Creek Greenway is officially open in Forsyth County, and officials said it extends the trail to an estimated 9.6 miles total.

The new portion of the trail starts at the Bethelview Road trailhead, heading generally northward parallel to Kelly Mill Road, ending at Johnson Road, officials said Friday in a news release.

“The Big Creek Greenway in Forsyth County is a very popular amenity, and we are excited to open up this new phase for use,” said Jim Pryor, director of Parks and Recreation.

For the next two years, however, trail users will have to use a temporary segment of the trail as crews continue to widen the Bethelview Bridge.

This portion is narrower — eight feet instead of 12 feet wide, and trail users are asked to use caution as they traverse this area.

This is the fourth phase of the trail project; the first three opened in 2009.
