Governor Nathan Deal and wife Sandra will help mark the 20th anniversary of the 1996 Summer Olympics August 5 and the part Gainesville and Hall County played in the games.

"Rio on the Water: Renewal of the Olympic Spirit" begins at 7:00 at the site of the Canoe/Kayak/Rowing events of the 1996 games as well as the recent Pan American Games.  The event will recognize honorary chairs Mary Hart Wilheit, Steve Gilliam and Jim Mathis, Jr. for their work in bringing the Olympics to the shores of Lake Lanier.

To celebrate the 20th Anniversary, festivities will include Brazilian Carnival of Entertainment including drummers and Samba by Dance Brasil along with a festival full of food, drink, music, and dance. Foods with a Brazilian flair by Chef Kern Chiasson will be served along with wine bars and craft beer by local vendor Tap It.

The Opening Ceremonies of the 2016 Olympic Games will be streamed live via NBC with a return to the world’s largest athletic stage in Rio De Janeiro. Highlighting the event will be the Atlanta Showstoppers, a 12-piece band considered one of the best in the South.
