Lake Lanier Olympic Venue to host Rio on the Water

By Alyson Shields
The Lake Lanier Olympic Venue has hosted numerous Olympic events over the years, most recently the Pan-American Championships. But the venue will host to one more Olympic themed event this August called Rio on the Water.

Rio on the Water will celebrate not only the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro , but also the 20 year anniversary of the Olympics in Atlanta.

"It will be at the venue on August 5, we'll have a Carnival type atmosphere, we will have a celebration of that leadership and a Carnival parade," Rio on the Water Committee Chair Mimi Collins said.

The leadership refers to a handful of people instrumental in bringing the 1996 Olympics to the Lake Lanier venue. Governor Deal will also be in the Parade of Honor, alongside those who helped bring the 1996 Olympics to Hall County.

During the festival, Chef Kern Chiasson will be on site, cooking food with a Brazilian flair, along with local craft beer vendor Tap It. The Atlanta Show Stoppers, a 12-piece band, will be the featured performance of the night, and the 2016 opening ceremony will be streamed as well.

"We just felt, what a neat thing to do celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Olympics being here in Gainesville and Hall County and celebrating all the progress we've made in the last two years to re-invest in the park," said Collins.

Tickets are $100 per person. More information about tickets and sponsorships are available here.
