A former high school and college football standout from North Georgia who died in a wrong-way crash on I-85 in August had a blood-alcohol level well over the legal limit, according to a medical examiner's report.

An article in the Colorado Gazette outlined findings from the Gwinnett County Medical Examiner's report on the death of Dee Dowis. The 48-year-old Dowis died as the result of blunt force trauma when his vehicle was hit in the driver's side as he tried to back up on the interstate near the Hamilton Mill Road exit.

The report also said Dowis' blood alcohol level was nearly three times the legal limit - measuring .210 and .233 in separate blood samples. The legal limit in Georgia is .08.

Dowis, who was living in Simpsonville, S.C. at the time of the fatal crash, was a native of Franklin County, Georgia. He was a standout quarterback for the Air Force Academy during his college football career.  He was the academy's career leading rusher and finished sixth in the 1989 Heisman.
