Franklin County wreck claims life of USMC veteran

A Sunday morning wreck involving a tractor-trailer near Lavonia claimed the life of a Hartwell man.

Michael Kevin Alexander, 43, died of injuries suffered in the two-vehicle wreck on Ga. 17 at Lankford Road near Lavonia, according to Georgia State Patrol Post 52 in Hartwell.

Alexander's 2005 Ford Explorer was traveling north on Ga. 17  and traveled into the front of a southbound 2005 Freightliner tractor-trailer that was stopped in the left turn lane to Lankford Road waiting on traffic to clear, according to GSP.

The truck was driven by David Wayne Whitfield, 51, of Eastanollee, who was not hurt.

Alexander was taken by Franklin County Emergency Medical Services to St. Mary's Hospital, where he died.

A witness told the investigating trooper that Alexander's driving appeared to be good before the vehicle crossed into the turn lane and struck the tractor-trailer.

According to an obituary from Coile Hall Spagnoli Funeral Home in Hartwell, Alexander was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and was a truck driver for Averitt Express.

A celebration of life ceremony for Alexander will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 5, at the funeral home chapel.
