Forsyth County officials will soon break ground on a new fire station on Keith Bridge Road in the northeast part of the county, replacing the outdated station that currently resides on the site.
The move will force a temporary relocation for the crew staffing Fire Station 8, which will continue to offer normal coverage during the construction efforts at 6015 Keith Bridge Road.
Constructed by volunteers in 1984, the current Station 8 was not intended to provide 24-hour coverage and, according to officials, has long exceeded its life expectancy.
Forsyth County Fire Chief Danny Bowman said officials sought the relocation, which comes at no cost to the county, in order to ensure continued coverage for area residents.
“The most important thing for Forsyth County residents to know is that their safety and protection is at all times our highest priority," he said. "Extensive research was done to determine the best location possible from which our personnel could respond during construction of the new station.”
Station 8's crew and equipment will relocate to Dawson County's Fire Station 2, which is located at 145 Liberty Drive just off of Highway 53 East.
A media release from Forsyth County Communications Director Jodi Gardner said the move was made possible by a memorandum of understanding between the counties, a gesture that is appreciated by Forsyth Division Chief Kevin Wallace.
“We are extremely appreciative of Dawson County’s willingness to assist us by housing the firefighters and fire engine from Fire Station 8 throughout construction of our replacement station,” he said.
The new station will be a four-stall facility designed for 24-hour use. Construction efforts are funded by a combination of the SPLOST VI program and Impact Fees, and comes at no additional cost to county residents.
Relocation efforts are expected to occur by mid-February and will continue until the new Station 8 is completed. Officials have given a rough timetable of 12 to 14 months for its completion.
