Registration is underway for the 14th session of the Gainesville Citizens’ Government Academy.
Sponsored by the City of Gainesville, the nine week session will begin Monday, March 14 with graduation on Monday, May 16. Classes will be held from 6pm-9pm at various city facilities.
[Suzanne Moses, class of 2014] "I had no idea there was so much certification going on. We should be really proud of the city. This has been a wonderful experience and I would highly suggest it to any Gainesville resident."
[Terry Vlaz, class of 2014] "Extremely impressive experience and each department is a little better than the one before."
[Hale Spiegleberg, class of 2013] "I think it was great. We learned a lot about the government we did not know. You know sometimes as a private businessman, I tend to think that the government is overpowering and it doesn't provide a lot of information to us and by coming to the citizens Academy we've actually been able to enjoy and learn about government what the processes are and it helps us understand better the services that they provide."
[Glenda Pierce, class of 2013] "I've enjoyed every one of them. All of them. I couldn't believe - three hours, what anybody would be able to do in three hours. I thought it would be too long and too...you know. It was not at all. It was full of information the whole time and we had a lot of fun. We went on all the - the fire department, the police department, the water works, the utilities, and all the... flat creek treatment plant and good food and just very good - a lot of information."
[Rosa Pizano, class of 2013] "You don't get any other opportunity besides this to really come in, feel welcomed, and for you to get all this knowledge of what really kind of goes behind the scenes I guess as you can say and I think all the information that you get is something that you will want to share with everybody."
Applicants must be 21 years of age and a resident of the United States. Registration forms are available on the City website at www.gainesville.org, or by calling 770-531-6598. The academy is free of charge. Registration ends February 26 and class size is limited.
