Tadmore fifth graders 'go to college'

By AccessWDUN staff
It is not every day that fifth graders can say they are being taught research by a college professor, but that is exactly what is happening at Tadmore Elementary School of Communication.

Earlier this week, Dr. Bryan Sorohan, Professor at Brenau University, partnered with Joan Armour’s Communications class of fifth graders to discuss the methods of research.

Dr. Sorohan’s philosophy of teaching is one that is based on several principles. First, the classroom environment must be open and conducive to respectful and thoughtful communication and participation. Second, the student must be challenged by the subject matter, but must also be helped at all times to contextualize within their own lives the knowledge and skills being learned, understanding the connections and implications of what they are learning to other areas of study and to the larger world. Third, the student must be encouraged and, if necessary, pushed to question and evaluate the quality and veracity of the information they are using.

He taught a lesson on the importance of learning how to properly research a topic and how it will benefit the scholar in life.

Dr. Sorohan will once again join the students next week to continue the lesson on research and the impact it has on the world around us.

According to a news release from the school, Tadmore hopes to continue its partnership with Dr. Sorohan, as well as other volunteers.
