Fire claims life of Habersham sheriff's office K-9

State and local officials are investigating a fire that claimed the life of Habersham County Sheriff's Office K-9 Falco Friday night.

The fire was in an outbuilding at his handler's residence on Payne Norton Road in Alto about 10:30 p.m., according to Capt. Floyd Canup, patrol commander for the sheriff's office.

Falco's handler was Cpl. Johnathan Thomas and they had been partners for just more than a year.

The State Fire Marshal's Office and Habersham County Fire Department are investigating.

No additional details have been released.
