Accidental fire damages car at Buford muffler shop

BUFORD - An accidental car fire at a Buford muffler shop Thursday afternoon heavy damaged the car.

Gwinnett Fire Captain Tommy Rutledge said in a release crews responded to the muffler shop at 803 West Shadburn Ferry Road after an employee called to report the fire just before 3 p.m.

"They were reporting a fire inside the building, in fact, they had heavy black smoke showing from the automotive garage window. Arriving on scene, crews found a vehicle that was well involved inside the automotive bay," Rutledge said.

Rutledge said the sprinkler system was keeping the fire contained. Firefighters attacked the fire with hose lines and entered the building to get the fire under control.

Employees were in the business, working on the vehicle when the fire started, but everyone was able to escape the building and no injuries were reported. "An employee was cutting a piece of metal, and the spark from that metal ignited a nearby fuel vapor, causing that fire," said Rutledge. "[There was] extensive damage to the automotive bay from smoke and heat, but the main body of firewas contained to the vehicle."

Crews were able to put the fire out in about half an hour. Rutledge said, "it was a good job by firefighters putting that fire out quickly, and a successful supression system sprinklers having it in check until firefighters could put it out."
