PEMBROKE, N.C. -- University of North Georgia baseball coach Tom Cantrell has been named Coach of the Year for the Southeast Region by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. It is the second such honor for the Nighthawk skipper this season as he was selected Peach Belt Conference Coach of the Year just last week by his peers.
Cantrell has guided the UNG program to a 574-355 (.618) record since reestablishing the sport in 2000. This season the baseball squad claimed their first PBC regular season crown, taking the league by a full 3.0 games over second-place Armstrong.
While the Nighthawks did not land a player on the All-Region first or second team, Jacob Beauchamp and Sam Tidaback each earned honorable mention recognition.
