North Georgia teen killed in street race

GREENE COUNTY - A North Oconee High School senior, less than a month from walking across the stage to receive his high school diploma, is dead after crashing his car during a street race in Greene County Tuesday night.

The Athens Banner-Herald reports that Benjamine David Kiracofe, 17, lost control of his BMW while trying to negotiate a curve on C.M. Copeland Road, and hit a tree around 10:25 p.m.

He died from his injuries.

The Georgia State Patrol said there were no passengers in the car, and the wreck remains under investigation.

Kiracofe played center for the Titans' football team.

School officials held a moment of silence Wednesday morning in rememberance, and sent extra counselors to the school to help grieving students.

Greene County is located roughly halfway between Atlanta and Augusta.
