Tanker truck overturns north of Helen

By Dean Dyer

HELEN - White County fire and law enforcement personnel remained on scene of an overturned fuel tanker truck wreck most of Wednesday.

The accident happened on Georgia Highway 75 north of Helen, near the Top of Georgia Airstream Park.

The crash was reported at 9:18 a.m. and White County Public Safety Director David Murphy said there was no injuries and no initial fuel spill.

According to Murphy, the tanker was owned by Clipper Petroleum Company and was hauling 8,000 gallons of gasoline and 2,000 gallons of diesel.

The company had to offload the fuel to another tanker and upright the truck, Murphy said. That process took most of the day.

Highway 75 was shut down to traffic around 3:30 p.m. and remained closed until just after 7 p.m.

Murphy said the company had a private hazmat team on hand do any cleanup necessary.
