YOUNG HARRIS -- The 26th-ranked University of North Georgia baseball team completed the series sweep of rival Young Harris today with a 7-2 victory over the Mountain Lions at Zell B. Miller Field. The Nighthawks advance to 26-11 on the season and further their lead in the Peach Belt standings to 1.5 games in front of second-place Armstrong State.
Tremayne Toorie continued his hot weekend at the plate with a two-run double in the top of the first to put UNG up 2-0. In the second inning, Connor Hoover drove in Joey Cecere in the second with a RBI single through the right side and Cecere knocked in Devin Gearhart with a RBI double to right center, putting the Hawks up 4-0.
Both teams would put up a pair of runs in the fifth inning and Andrew Gordon would add a his team-best 12th home run of the season in the top of the ninth to give the game its final 7-2 score.
Dylan Peppers (4-2) collected the win for North Georgia tossing 6.0 inning allowing two runs on just four hits while striking out seven. UNG saw a tremendous outing from the bullpen as Taylor Keinat, Chip Fleming and Avery Greer combined for 3.0 innings of shutout work allowing just two hits in the final three innings of play.
The Nighthawks will return to Bob Stein Stadium on Wednesday for a non-conference doubleheader against Anderson (S.C.). Both games will be seven-inning games with first pitch set for 4 p.m.
