STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. (AP) Some worshippers hoping to celebrate the Easter sunrise atop Stone Mountain weren't able to make it because high winds prompted a temporary shutdown of the Swiss cable cars that carry people up the mountain.
WSB-TV reports that about 100 people made it to the top of the mountain early Sunday on the Summit Skyride before it was closed due to high winds. Some others were able to make it by hiking up the mountain outside Atlanta that rises nearly 1,700 feet above sea level.
The Easter sunrise service atop Stone Mountain is an annual tradition on Easter Sunday.
WSB-TV said that an estimated 4,000 people were able to attend a simultaneous service at the base of the mountain on the memorial lawn.
