Former Habersham leader to be remembered Tuesday

DEMOREST - A former Habersham County leader and businessman will be remembered in funeral services Tuesday in Demorest.

Dewey H. Tench, 88, of Cornelia died Saturday, Oct. 31.

Tench served four terms on the Habersham County Commission, a number of those 16 years as chairman.

Former Habersham County Commissioner Greg Popham talked of his friend after learning of his death Monday.

"My heart is heavy this morning after learning of the passing of my good friend Dewey Tench on Saturday," Popham said. "I have known him most of my life, but I had the great privilege of serving with him on the Habersham County Commission in 2001 and 2002.

"During this time, Dewey and I became very good friends and we got to spend a lot of time working together, but also spent a lot of time with each other away from county business," Popham said. "Those times that I spent with him and [his wife] Nellie having a meal or just sitting around drinking coffee and enjoying each other's company I remember as some of the best times of my life - times that I will truly treasure for the rest of my life."

Tench was retired owner/operator of 441 Tire and Alignment in Clarkesville, and was a founding member of the Habersham County Sheriff's Posse. When the unit transitioned to the Habersham County Sheriff's Reserve, Tench continued with that organization until his retirement in 2012.

A number of people knew who Tench was from his years of directing traffic at Clarkesville Elementary School and at Scovill in Clarkesville.

Popham said Tench was a constant friend who never forgot those in his life.

"He and I could go without talking for a long time, but when we picked up the phone to talk to each other it was almost like we had just talked the day before," Popham said. "I considered him a true friend. The only solace that I can find is the fact that he is now back with Nellie and they are rejoicing together in God's house. Unfortunately, due to my job, I cannot be there to pay my respects. But I will be praying for the family during this time and hope that they can find peace. Please join me in praying for this family."

Following Tench's 2 p.m. funeral Tuesday at Whitfield Funeral Home, North Chapel, in Demorest, the World War II veteran will be buried at New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery with full military honors.
