Golf: Johnson, Lumpkin girls qualify for state sectionals

The Johnson girls finished second and the Lumpkin County girls third to qualify for state sectionals on Monday in the Region 8-AAAA golf tournament at Highland Walk Golf Course in Royston.

Madison County won the tournament with a team score of 287, led by low medalist Katie Jane Phillips with an 88.

Kristin Waters paced Johnson with a 98, while Lauren Smith shot a 100, and Taylor Young finished with a 109. The Lady Knights finished with a team score of 307

The Lady Indians fired a team score of 318, highlighted by Morgan Wood's 90 -- good enough for second overall individually. Wood, a Brenau University signee, shot a back-nine score of 39 to tie the LCHS record for nine holes.

Taylor Gooch also shot a 110 for Lumpkin County; Hannah Fowler finished with a 118; and Haley Dibble shot a 119.

Both teams will compete in the Class AAAA state sectional on May 6 at Applewood Golf Course in Keysville, as will Stephens County's Ally Brock, who carded a 97, fourth overall, qualifying as an individual.
