INDIANAPOLIS -- Georgia pulled away Saturday night to dethrone two-time defending champion California at the NCAA women's swimming and diving championships.
The Bulldogs won their first title since 2005 by scoring 477 points. Cal, winners of three of the last four titles - all over Georgia - settled for second with 393 points.
The difference was that Georgia had twice as many swimmers qualify for the finals and consolation finals than Cal, and the Bulldogs outperformed the Golden Bears on the final night.
Allison Schmitt, who won three Olympic golds in London, helped Georgia set an NCAA, meet and U.S. Open record in the 400-yard free relay in 3 minutes, 9.40 seconds.
Cal's Elizabeth Pelton broke her own American record in the 200 backstroke, finishing in 1:47.84.
