TOCCOA - Currahee Military Museum will host an Inaugural D-Day Run honoring the paratroopers who trained at Camp Toccoa and jumped at Normandy on June 6, 1944, and all soldiers who fought during World War II. Organizers say the 10K run will take participants in the footsteps of the 17,000 men who trained on Currahee Mountain during the war.
"We will have eight age groups and three team competitions, with six runners per team," said Brenda Carlan, the museum's executive director. "Team categories are active military, retired military and civilian."
Carlan said all proceeds will be used for the Camp Toccoa at Currahee Project that will preserve the legacy of the men who trained there.
For more information on the race or signing on as a sponsor, contact the museum at 706-282-5055 or visit the museum's website events page, www.toccoahistory.com or you can register on line with www.active.com.
The run will take place June 2 at Camp Toccoa at Currahee Mountain, with on-site registration beginning at 6:30 a.m. and the race at 8:00.
