Couple rescued from Chattahoochee River

By Dean Dyer/WRWH
CLEVELAND - A young couple who became lost while rafting on the Chattahoochee River in White County was rescued after about a three-hour search Tuesday night by rescue personnel.

White County Fire Department spokeswoman Ana Newberry said the two entered the river around 4:00 Tuesday at Wildwood Outfitters east of Cleveland. Newberry says a few wrong turns and a couple of hours later they realized that they were lost and needed assistance. About 10:00 Tuesday night, rescue personnel were alerted.

According to Newberry, the couple had a cell phone but the battery was running down. Much of the area was inaccessible due to heavy brush and deep ravines.

Eleven firefighters were called out and responders searched the river banks by foot and by ATV. Finally, at 12:40 Wednesday morning, the couple was met by firefighters and escorted to safety. They were uninjured.
