CUMMING - Several attempts to salvage part of the 172-acre Lanier Golf Club in Cumming for a golf club or green space have failed, and now the Forsyth County Commission has voted to rezone the whole tract.
The people who live around the golf course had wanted to make sure that part of the land was preserved for a golf course or green space.
But after no agreement could be reached, county spokesman Logan Thomas said Wednesday the county commission, by a 3-2 vote, decided to rezone part of it (the front 93.8 acres) to a master planned district and the rest (the back 78.6 acres) to Residential-Two.
The dispute goes back at least five years when Wellstone Communities proposed using the golf course land for a mixed-use development. (See earlier story.)
