Buford police standoff over

By Ken Stanford Contributing Editor
BUFORD - Gwinnett County police say a standoff with a man who had barricaded himself inside his Buford home is over.

Police got a call to Valley Mill Court about 3:00 this morning to a report of a disturbance involving and a man and his wife.

"The argument between the two escalated after the wife stated that she was going to leave the house," Cpl. Edwin Ritter said. "He refused to allow her to leave and he retrieved a long gun and threatened to commit suicide if she called the police. She managed to get out of the house with their teenage daughter and called the police."

Cpl. Ritter said officers arrived and attempted to make contact with the man but were unsuccessful.

"Crisis negotiators were unable to contact the husband and the decision was made to deploy (tear) gas into the home," Ritter said. "Still there was no contact with the husband and a robot was deployed into the home. The robot located the husband in the second story of the residence, dead from an apparent self- inflicted gunshot wound."

Cpl. Ritter said SWAT team members then entered the house and confirmed the man's death.
