Ga. gives $10,000 in grants to historic theaters

By The Associated Press
ATLANTA - Six of Georgia's historic theaters - including one in northeast Georgia - are splitting $10,000 in grants to preserve the buildings and promote tourism.

The grants range from $2,500 to produce a puppet show history of Bulloch County at Statesboro's Averitt Center for the Arts to $825 for the Washington Little Theater in Wilkes County to produce a promotional brochure and update its website.

Other recipients include the President Theatre in Manchester, the former Ritz Theater in Toccoa, the Springer Opera House in Columbus and the Dosta Theater in Valdosta.

The grants were awarded by the state Historic Preservation Division, the Georgia Department of Economic Development's Tourism Division and Atlanta's Fox Theatre Institute.

David Crass, director of the Historic Preservation Division, says the grant program aims to raise awareness of historic Georgia theaters through heritage tourism.
