UGA employee data found on public website

By The Associated Press
ATHENS - University of Georgia officials say they're investigating how sensitive personnel information for nearly 19,000 employees ended up on a publicly available university website for at least the last three years.

UGA spokesman Tom Jackson said Friday that the database was created for internal purposes but a university official recently discovered that the information had been available publicly since at least 2008.

He said the database included the Social Security number, date of birth, employee name and other information for everyone employed by the university in 2002. He said that includes any students working for UGA at the time.

Jackson said no credit fraud problems have been reported so far. The university is recommending that all in the database put a fraud alert on their accounts through a credit reporting service.
