Enota students walk to school as part of national campaign

By Ken Stanford Contributing Editor
GAINESVILLE - It's International Walk to School Day - and walk to school is just what two groups of parents, students and others from Enota Elementary School in Gainesville did this morning.

Organizers were expecting about 250 students to make the short hike to their school from either Green's Grocery on Ronnie Green Parkway or the Elks Club on Riverside Drive.

The ideal behind Walk To School Day, of course, is to promote health, safety, physical activity and concern for the environment, and to call attention to the need for safe walking or biking routes to school.

Once they got to school, participants, invited guests and public safety officials met in the cafeteria for a breakfast, emphasizing healthy foods such as fruit and whole grain cereals.

This the 13th year for Walk to School Day and more than 3,000 schools in all 50 states were expected to participate.
