Jones' record night helps Buford dump Lovett

By staff reports
ATLANTA -- Buford running back Seon Jones has been dangerous in every game this season -- but nothing like this. In fact no Wolves running back has ever done anything like this.

Jones exploded for a school-record 319 yards on 17 carries on Friday night, helping Buford pound out 506 yards rushing in a 37-14 win over Lovett.

The second-ranked Wolves (4-1) overcame a 14-13 lead by the ninth-ranked Lions (2-2) on Jones' nine-yard touchdown run with 1:12 left in the first half, and Buford never trailed again.

Jones' 85-yard scoring run in the third quarter helped seal the contest at 34-14 and capped a night for the ages that began almost at kickoff.

The Wolves senior ripped off runs of 32, 58, 43, 16 and 19 yards in the first quarter and finished with 188 yards in the opening half. Dominique Swope also finished with 86 yards rushing for Buford and scored the Wolves' opening touchdown to pull Buford within 7-6 after Lovett jumped on a fumbled punt early in the game to take a 7-0 lead.

Eric Barr added a 49-yard scoring run for a 13-7 Wolves advantage, but Lovett scored to take a 14-13 lead in the second quarter. From then on it was all Buford, as Darrian Smith and Jones each scored touchdowns and David Petroni added a 38-yard field goal, all in the second half.

The Buford defense took over in the second half, holding Lovett to 26 yards passing after allowing 122 in the first half. The Lions finished with 259 total yards.

The Wolves head to Deactur next week for their first subregion game of the season.
