Vicki Nichols retires from NGTC

CLARKESVILLE-Few people can make a huge impact on an institution and fewer still manage to do so twice. Vicki Nichols has been a major force in the development of North Georgia Technical College's academic standing. First, as Vice President of Institutional Effectiveness, she led NGTC to the achievement of the SACS/COC accreditation.

Two years later she returned as Vice President of Academic Affairs and has done the major foundational work towards taking the school from an academic calendar of quarters to semesters.

"We owe her a great debt for the detailed work she did arranging articulation agreements with several of our fine neighboring schools such as Piedmont College," said NGTC President Steve Dougherty.

Ms. Nichols, who resides with her husband, Charlie, in Cornelia, Georgia, says her decision to retire has been bittersweet. "I've been in a lot of colleges, but our faculty here has a passion for programs and student success
that outshines the rest."

Ms. Nichols came to NGTC from an extensive tour of duty with North Metro Technical College in Acworth, Georgia, that began in 1992. There she served in a variety of roles including Business and Accounting Instructor, Director of Instruction, Director of Curriculum, and Director of Institutional Effectiveness. In fact, it was her experience with North Metro's SACS/COC accreditation process that brought her to Clarkesville in 2006. Ms. Nichols' background also includes two years as a middle school teacher and various administrative positions in private business prior to entering a career in education.

"Vicki Nichols is the example you should follow if you ever have someone who needs to learn a management or leadership role," said Currahee Campus Director Greg Roach at the retirement reception held for Ms. Nichols by faculty and staff.

"I was humbled by the words and comments of appreciation from the faculty and staff," said Nichols. "I am very grateful for my time here at NGTC and the new friends that I have made. I will miss everyone. Even though I plan to stay in touch, it will not be the same."

"During our several years of working history, I always knew I could count on Vicki to bring change with integrity, warmth, and cheerfulness," said Steve Dougherty. "She has been a great friend and counselor, and on behalf of all of us at North Georgia Tech, we do thank her very much for her significant contributions."

Ms. Nichols insists that she is excited about the next "season" of her life. "I have only one last request," she smiled. "That the welding building be completed in my lifetime, because I would love to come to the open house."
