BRASELTON-What's in a name? A chance for one lucky school-aged child to win a Mayfield Ice Cream party and cool Mayfield-branded gifts for his or her family or school group, that's what.
The Mayfield Visitor Center in Braselton, Ga., has a new inhabitant-a life-sized working replica of a Jersey cow. But, sadly, she doesn't have a name. So from now until January 31, Mayfield is calling on school-aged visitors to the dairy to submit cow names for a chance to win a Mayfield Ice Cream party.
"We added a replica of a Jersey cow to our visitor center because it's a fun way to let people try their hand at 'milking' a cow," said Mayfield President Scottie Mayfield. "Now that she's arrived to give folks another exciting thing to do when they visit us, we need a name for her. So we really need some help from students with a knack for naming cows."
In addition to an ice cream party, the winning student will also receive a certificate from Mayfield Dairy Farms, personally presented by a Mayfield representative.
According to Dawn Thompson, manager of the Braselton visitor center, the cow-naming contest is part of the dairy's efforts to attract more visitors to the family-friendly dairy this fall.
"We hope the chance to win a Mayfield Ice Cream party will attract a few more visitors, but the attraction really is the dairy itself-there's so much to see and do here," said Thompson.
Indeed, the dairy offers fun and educational behind-the-scenes tours where visitors learn how Mayfield products are made. The free tour begins with a short film that shows how delicious Mayfield Milk makes it from the dairy to the fridge and what makes Mayfield Ice Cream the creamiest ice cream around.
From there, kids and adults alike will enjoy seeing if they have what it takes to produce milk from the new life-sized Jersey cow replica-it's sure to be easy for some and a challenge for others.
Next, visitors can see the Aro-Vac machine removing all the unwanted flavors from milk to give it that signature Mayfield taste and watch lab technicians test the milk to assure it meets Mayfield's high quality standards. The tour ends at unloading, where tanker trucks make daily deliveries of millions of gallons of milk right from the farm.
After the tour, browse the gift shop for great Mayfield-branded keepsakes, and, of course, be sure to buy a generous scoop of delicious Mayfield Ice Cream at the old-fashioned Ice Cream Parlor.
"A visit to Mayfield Dairy is fun for the whole family, and it's the perfect field trip for schools, church groups or any organization," said Mr. Mayfield. "I hope a lot of kids visit us this fall because we really need a name for our new Jersey girl."
