AP: Feds to return to run detention centers

WASHINGTON - The Obama administration wants to change how it oversees the treatment of people at the nation's largest immigration detention centers.

It's preparing a plan to use federal employees to monitor the nation's biggest facilities -- instead of private contractors. Private companies had been doing the job since 2007 as a way of ensuring impartial inspections.

The switch is part of Immigration and Customs Enforcement policy changes being announced this morning.

Part of the plan includes the creation of a new position: the director of the Office of Detention Policy and Planning.

Immigration detention has grown in recent years, with the federal government holding more than 32,000 detainees on a daily basis.
