Glades Reservoir meeting tonight

By Staff
GAINESVILLE - You'll get a chance tonight to tell Hall County officials what you think about a the proposed Glades Reservoir.

The meeting will be held at 6:00 at the Georgia Mountains Center.

The county has submitted an application to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers seeking a permit to build the water supply reservoir. County officials say the 850-acre Glades Reservoir will generate 6.4 million gallons of water per day, which is about one-third of the current water usage rate.

They note that a ruling earlier this month by U.S. District Court Judge Paul Magnuson orders Gainesville to cut back its Lake Lanier withdrawals from 18.5 to 8 million gallons per day within three years, so alternative water sources such as Glades Reservoir are needed.

The public hearing is part of a required 30-day comment period that the Corps has extended to 60 days to allow more time for review in light of the recent federal court decision. The public may submit comments in writing until Sept. 6 at the following address:

Savannah District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers
Piedmont Branch
Attn: Mr. Justin Hammonds
1590 Adamson Parkway, Suite 200
Morrow, GA 30260-1777

In offering comment by mail, you need to the project name as Glades Reservoir, USACE Project Number 200700388.

Further questions about the comment period may be directed to the Corps Project Manager Justin Hammonds 770-904-2365. More information about the reservoir is available at hallcounty.org or by contacting Hall County Public Information Officer Nikki Young at 770-297-5504 or [email protected].
