Minor injuries as car plunges into Lake Lanier

By Staff
GAINESVILLE - The female driver was taken to the hospital after her Jeep Liberty plunged into Lake Lanier Wednesday morning.

The accident happened on the northbound approach to Clarks Bridge on Clarks Bridge Road about 8:15. The woman was out of the car when police and EMTs arrived and told them she was the only person in the car.

"The car ran off the right side of the road and it looks like she over corrected," State Trooper Aaron Church said. "It hit the guard rail and went air borne after that and came to rest in the lake."
"There was just one person in the vehicle and she was able to get out on her own; witnesses said when the vehicle hit the water, she came out."

Church said the Jeep went through a guardrail. Divers from Hall County Fire Services had to enter the water and hook a wrecker cable to the car before it could be removed, but the wrecker cable was not long enough to haul the vehicle to shore, so a heavy duty wrecker with a crane was called in.

Sheriff's deputies had to close both lanes of Clarks Bridge Road at the bridge again so the big wrecker could pull the vehicle up the bank and onto the road.

Georgia Department of Transportation crews were called to repair the guardrail.
