Bagwell takes over as chair of GHCC

GAINESVILLE - A new chairman took office Thursday at the Greater Hall Chamber of Commerce.

Emily Bagwell had served as chairman-elect for the past year and assumed the chairmanship at Thursday's meeting of the chamber board of directors and said she's ready for the challenges that will accompany her position during the current financial crisis.

"I think because of Gainesville's diverse economy and because of the cooperative efforts of a variety of folks in the business community and the governments that we are going to continue to weather the storm," she said.

The new chairman said she feels it's important to concentrate on meeting the needs of existing industries at this time.

Bagwell's mother, Joanne Bagwell, served as the first female chair of the chamber in the late 1980s.

She said her mother hasn't given her any specific advice, but she said her mom did give her some general guidance about the new position.

"She has advised that I need to be sure that I'm organized and keep everything moving," said Bagwell.

Bagwell succeeds R.K. Whitehead who served as the Greater Hall Chamber of Commerce 2008-2009 chairman.
