Johnson: changes to Talladega can control racing

By The Associated Press
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Three-time defending NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson says the only way to control the racing at Talladega Superspeedway is a radical transformation of the track.

He says to avoid accidents like Carl Edwards' airborne crash into the safety fence on Sunday, NASCAR needs to take a tractor inside Talladega and knock down the walls and banking.

Johnson says that alteration would change the racing surface and cars would no longer be bunched in the tight packs that lead to massive accidents.

NASCAR says changing Talladega is not an option.

The governing body vowed to be tougher on policing aggressive driving and blocking, but Johnson says no punishment will deter drivers from defending their race position
