ROSWELL - The John Hunter Regatta returns to Lake Lanier this weekend after four years in "exile" because of the low levels of the drought-stricken lake.
St. Andrew Rowing Club (SARC and Georgia Tech Crew have scheduled rowing teams from throughout the southeast and from colleges as far away as Virginia and Texas for the April 4-5 event. The regatta was held in Oak Ridge, Tenn., each of the last four years, but now returns home to Lake Lanier Olympic venue.
"We're expecting more than 1,200 rowers, from high school through college and beyond, to compete in this year's regatta," said Dan McNair, Head Coach of the St Andrew Rowing Club. "It's bound to be quite the spectacle, with teams leveraging their mid-season competitive angst in the waters of Lake Lanier."
As a result of the regatta, the Clarks Bridge Park boat ramp will be closed Saturday and Sunday.
About the John Hunter Regatta:
Begun by Georgia Tech Rowing in 1983 and originally called the Atlanta Rowing Festival, the John Hunter Regatta was renamed in 1999 to honor a friend of rowing and benefactor to the Georgia Tech and Saint Andrew Rowing Clubs. It was he who had the vision to help these programs grow from a few dedicated rowers to the teams they are today.
