Sandra Deal Elementary Schools hope to raise money for World Championship

By Helen Park

A Hall County Elementary School is asking the public for their help to send the Odyssey of the Mind State Team to the world championship.

Sandra Dunagan Deal Elementary School had a first place finish at a competition in Columbus earlier this month. Odyssey of the Mind is an international creative problem-solving competition that challenges students to use critical thinking, teamwork, and innovation to solve complex problems.

Guy Cassels, the team's head, said this is a big opportunity for the students to be able to attend.

“Coaching means harnessing every ounce of the Team's creativity to help them unlock new levels of problem solving abilities that they didn’t know they had,” said Cassels.

Phoebe, the youngest member on the Team, agreed.

“The biggest thing I get [from Odyssey] is teamwork. I mean, I’m used to doing things on my own, but with this, the problems are just so big. We had to learn how to work together. With all the traveling and competing, now we feel like a family,” Phoebe said.

The costs associated with traveling to the World Finals—including transportation, lodging, meals, and competition fees—are significant. To help make this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity a reality, the team haslaunched a GoFundMe campaign at https://gofund.me/9a157d4e.  Every donation, no matter the size, will contribute to their journey and allow them to showcase their hard work and ingenuity on an international platform.
