ATLANTA - Mark Teixeira hit a two-run homer and Yunel Escobar added a three-run shot in Atlanta's seven-run eighth inning and the Braves beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 10-2 tonight.
Jair Jurrjens, acquired in the offseason deal that sent Edgar Renteria to Detroit, gave up seven hits and two runs in 5 1-3 innings to help the Braves avoid an 0-3 start. Jurrjens struck out five with only one walk.
Jurrjens (1-0) gave up only four hits in five scoreless innings before tiring in the sixth. He was pulled after giving up three hits in the inning, including
Xavier Nady's two-run double.
Tom Gorzelanny (0-1) gave up six hits and three runs with three walks and three strikeouts in six innings.
The Braves led only 3-2 before the big eighth inning.
After Tyler Yates walked Jones, Damaso Marte gave up Teixeira's two-run homer. Marte gave up another run on three straight singles to Jeff Francoeur, Brian McCann and Matt Diaz.
Evan Meek, making his major league debut, gave up a run-scoring single to Martin Prado and Escobar's three-run homer to left.
Teixeira was 1-for-13 (.077) before his homer.
