Senate race tightens a bit

By The Associated Press
ATLANTA - The race for the U.S. Senate seat now held by Republican Saxby Chambliss has tightened a bit since before dawn this morning.

Chambliss is battling for a second term -- fighting a surge of Democratic voters and frustration over the economy.

With 96 percent of the vote counted, Chambliss has 49.8 percent of the vote; Demcorat Jim Martin, 46.8 percent; and, Libertarian Allen Buckley, 3.4 percent.

That's according to the Secretary of State's Web site.

If that margin holds, Chambliss will win re-election without a runoff, but four percent of the vote has not been reported.

At a Republican party at the Intercontinental Hotel in Atlanta, Chambliss predicts the race will be ``very, very close'' but said there is a chance to avoid a runoff with more than 50 percent of the vote.

Vote counting hit a snag late last night as early voting numbers were slow to trickle in. Secretary of State Karen Handel's office said early voting totals from Fulton and Gwinnett counties had yet to be counted. Early voting numbers in those two counties alone totaled more than 275,000 votes.

A Handel spokesman, Matt Carrothers, said the snag is ``just part of the process.''
