Athens Academy student wins 2007 Jackson EMC Energy Bowl

JEFFERSON - Everett Young, a junior at Athens Academy, won an <br /> all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. as the winner of the November 8 Energy Bowl Challenge.<br /> <br /> Hosted by Jackson Electric Membership Corporation (EMC), the academic quiz bowl tests area high school students on their knowledge of energy and other science-related topics. Young competed against students from 17 local high schools.<br /> <br /> In rounds one and two of the competition, students use a short answer format. Participants with the five highest scores then move on to the final round, which uses a buzzer system.<br /> <br /> Placing first, Young received a Visa gift card, Palm Zire Handheld Organizer, a $2,000 scholarship, and an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. for the 2007 Washington Youth Tour. Athens Academy also benefited from his achievement, receiving a $1,000 educational grant.<br /> <br /> ""Each year, the Energy Bowl attracts a number of outstanding students, and we are honored to play a role in this event," said Randall Pugh, President/CEO of Jackson EMC. "We are committed to supporting educational and science-related programs within Jackson EMC communities."<br /> <br /> An Honorable mention to the other finalists who competed in Round three for the prestigious title: Justin Eckelberry, first runner-up, Flowery Branch High School; Benjamin Foster, Dacula High School; Zachary Snyder, Grayson High School; and Joshua Moncada, West Hall High School. All finalists received a Visa gift card, gift bags, and Palm Zire Handheld Organizer.<br /> Jackson EMC will also select a second Washington Youth Tour delegate in April through the Youth Citizenship Award program, which rewards students with outstanding community involvement. The winner will receive a $2,000 scholarship, an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. and a $1,000 grant for the civic organization of their choice. Applications may be obtained from area high-school guidance counselors or through the Jackson EMC Web site.
