Escapee still at large

GAINESVILLE - The deputy warden at the Hall County Correctional Institute says the escape of a prisoner from a work detail Friday apparently resulted from negligence on the part of a guard and nothing else.

Prison officials say they don't believe the escape had anything to do with the ratio of guards to inmates.

They say the search area for Joseph Maskevich, who fled in a county truck, now includes the entire southeast.

Maskevich was locked up on unrelated charges in June after being questioned, but never charged, in connection with a fire in East Hall.
