From firemen, Red Cross and Salvation Army workers, utility personnel and others, many from our area hit the roads to the coast to pitch in.
Shelters were opened in such places as Gainesville and Toccoa and benefit concerts were held.
Schools, colleges and others collected money - as did twin Gainesville sisters - Katherine and Suzanne Smith - who set up a lemonade stand to raise money, collecting almost a thousand dollars in the process.
It was reminiscent of the way our community came together in 1992 to help the South Florida victims of Hurricane Andrew.
