Jones' Agent at Impasse With Titans

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - The agent for Adam &#34;Pacman&#34; Jones said negotiations reached an impasse Friday for Tennessee&#39;s top draft pick, and the cornerback was returning to Jacksonville, Fla. The news caught the Titans&#39; general manager by surprise.<br> <br> &#34;I don&#39;t think I&#39;ve ever seen this,&#34; Floyd Reese said an hour before the Titans kicked off their preseason game against Tampa Bay. &#34;So this one&#39;s kind of new. I&#39;ve only been doing this for 30 years, and this is the first time the press got an e-mail and the G.M. didn&#39;t.&#34;<br> <br> Agent Michael Huyghue flew into town Thursday hoping to conclude a contract for the sixth pick overall and the first defensive player taken in the draft. He told reporters Thursday that both he and Jones know that time is crucial if the cornerback is to have a chance of a productive rookie season.<br> <br> But he issued a statement Friday afternoon, saying that they have not been able to reach agreement. Huyghue said the Titans&#39; total offer was less money than given to cornerback Antrel Rolle, the eighth pick of the draft by Arizona. <br> <br> Rolle signed a six-year, $43 million contract Tuesday with $13.6 million in guaranteed money.<br> <br> &#34;While we made some initial progress in our negotiations, ultimately, the Titans have refused to offer a fair market deal to Adam,&#34; Huyghue said.<br> <br> Reese said he met for less than two hours with Huyghue on Thursday and wasn&#39;t told that they had reached an impasse. He said the Titans&#39; offer was slotted at $18 million, between the $19 million for Tampa Bay running back Carnell Williams and $17 million for No. 7 pick Troy Williamson.<br> <br> &#34;We didn&#39;t spend much time negotiating, I tell you that,&#34; he said. <br> <br> Huyghue said the Titans&#39; offer included the same compensation as the seventh and eighth picks, but lower amounts for option bonus, total signing bonus and guaranteed money and less incentive money than Rolle.<br> <br> The Titans said before starting negotiations last month that they want Jones&#39; contract to include protection for the franchise because he was arrested July 13 on charges of misdemeanor assault and one count of felony vandalism.<br> <br> But Reese said they never got far enough in their short talks Thursday to delve into the behavior language.<br> <br> The Titans drafted Jones hoping he can fill one of two cornerback slots left open by salary cap decisions. The 5-foot-10, 185-pound Jones won the Titans over when he clocked a 4.38 in the 40-yard dash and recorded a 39-inch vertical leap before the draft.<br> <br> © 2005 The Associated Press.
