Some U.S. Forest Service rec fees dropped

By by Ken Stanford
GAINESVILLE - Some fees are being eliminated at 38 recreation sites in the Chattahoochee and Oconee National Forest.

It's part of a national adjustment to the U.S. Forest Service's recreation fee program - but the list does not include areas with lots of amenities.

Karen McKenzie, spokeswoman for the Forest Service office in Gainesville, says those sites being removed from the fee program are primarily ones that fall into the "undeveloped" category .

McKenzie says the fees that are being eliminated do not meet the criteria for fees set aside in recently legislation recently passed by Congress and signed by President Bush. And, she points out that not all fees at each of the sites are being discontinued.
