LSU's Augustus wins Naismith trophy for player of the year

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) LSU&#39;s Seimone Augustus won the 2005 Naismith Trophy as Women&#39;s College Basketball Player of the Year, the school announced Tuesday.<br> <br> The trophy was presented by Cingular Wireless and the Atlanta Tipoff Club.<br> <br> Augustus, a 6-foot-1 guard, won the United States Basketball Writers Association Player of the Year award, the State Farm Wade Trophy and the Associated Press Player of the Year awards this season.<br> <br> Augustus averaged 20.1 points and 4.5 rebounds for the Lady Tigers, leading them to the program&#39;s second straight trip to the NCAA Final Four and the 33-3 overall record. Augustus, the Southeastern Conference Player of the Year, also helped LSU record a perfect 14-0 record in the SEC for the school&#39;s first regular season conference title.<br> <br> ``This is a great honor for me and LSU,&#39;&#39; Augustus said. ``I know there are a lot of great players in the country and I am very appreciative to receive this award. This honor does not go just to me, but it goes to my teammates and my coaches. I could not have done this without any of them.&#39;&#39;<br> <br> The Naismith Trophy is given annually to the men&#39;s and women&#39;s college players of the year and is one of the most prestigious national awards in college basketball.<br> <br> Augustus will be recognized at the Naismith Awards Banquet presented by Delta Air Lines on April 8 in Atlanta.
