LSU's Augustus wins Naismith trophy for player of the year

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) LSU's Seimone Augustus won the 2005 Naismith Trophy as Women's College Basketball Player of the Year, the school announced Tuesday.<br>

The trophy was presented by Cingular Wireless and the Atlanta Tipoff Club.<br>
<br>
Augustus, a 6-foot-1 guard, won the United States Basketball Writers Association Player of the Year award, the State Farm Wade Trophy and the Associated Press Player of the Year awards this season.<br>
<br>
Augustus averaged 20.1 points and 4.5 rebounds for the Lady Tigers, leading them to the program's second straight trip to the NCAA Final Four and the 33-3 overall record. Augustus, the Southeastern Conference Player of the Year, also helped LSU record a perfect 14-0 record in the SEC for the school's first regular season conference title.<br>

``This is a great honor for me and LSU,'' Augustus said. ``I know there are a lot of great players in the country and I am very appreciative to receive this award. This honor does not go just to me, but it goes to my teammates and my coaches. I could not have done this without any of them.''<br>
<br>
The Naismith Trophy is given annually to the men's and women's college players of the year and is one of the most prestigious national awards in college basketball.<br>
<br>
Augustus will be recognized at the Naismith Awards Banquet presented by Delta Air Lines on April 8 in Atlanta. The other finalists were Duke's Monique Currie, Ohio State's Jessica Davenport and TCU's Sandora Irvin.<br>
