WASHINGTON - The population of Hall County has surged past 160,000, according to a new estimate from the Census Bureau.

That's about 4,500 more than a year earlier - and compares to 139,277 following the 2000 census.

The Census Bureau estimates that Hall County had 160,925 residents as of July 2004, compared to an estimate of 156,361 a year earlier. That's an increase of about three percent.

Four counties in the area are among the 100 fastest-growing in the country: Forsyth, Barrow, Jackson, and Gwinnett.

For the first time in four years, no Georgia county is among the ten fastest-growing in the country. Twelve counties, however, made the list of top 100 - lead by Newton (12th), followed by Henry (14th), Forsyth (15th), Paulding (19th), Barrow (24th), Bryan (31st), Douglas (33rd), Jackson (53rd), Cherokee (54th), Pike (67th), Effingham (68th), and Gwinnett (82nd).

The estimates for counties adjacent to Hall are as follows (the 2004 estimates are listed first, the 2003 numbers are listed second):
