SAVANNAH - Jimmy Powell and Orville Moody had a better-ball score of 16-under 128 to win the 36-hole Demaret Division competition Tuesday by seven strokes at the 28th Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf.
Powell and Moody's seven-shot margin over Joe Jimenez and Charlie Sifford on the Westin Savannah Harbor course was the largest since the Demaret Division went to a team competition for players over age 70 in 1994. Jerry Barber defeated Australian Kel Nagle by 10 strokes in the inaugural Demaret event at Barton Creek Country Club in Austin in 1993.
Powell and Moody, who have known each other since high school in Texas, were 9-under par as a team over a 12-hole stretch (Nos. 415) that included a near double eagle by Moody. At the par-5 13th hole, Moody's 3-wood second shot stopped just 6 inches from the hole.
Moody and Powell received 95-thousand dollars from the overall purse of $370,000.
