SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) Missouri State will eliminate five of its 21 sports at the end of the school year. It's a cost-cutting move designed to save 350-thousand to 500-thousand dollars annually.
The school's board of governors has unanimously approved the proposal by university President Michael Nietzel to cut men's indoor and outdoor track, men's cross country and men's and women's tennis.
Nietzel said athletics' costs had grown too fast over the past years and needed to be reduced even without potential cuts by the state Legislature next year. The cuts affect 41 athletes whose scholarships would be honored even after the programs are cut at the end of the 2005-06 season.
