As Southwest DeKalb coach Buck Godfrey's players celebrated on the field after a 17-2 upset over Tucker Friday night, he looked into the stands to see some familiar faces.

"There were a lot of our former players in the crowd tonight, and they were saying that this looked like good old-fashioned Southwest DeKalb football," Godfrey said.

It was and then some. The Panthers' defense shut out previously undefeated Tucker _ which was averaging 38.6 points per game _ to advance to the second round of the state playoffs.

"Tucker has a lot of great players with great speed on its offense," Panthers safety Hiram Atwater said. "But we have the same, if not more, on our defense."

Southwest DeKalb (7-4) jumped to a 17-0 lead and that was enough. Brandon Jones scored on a 1-yard run in the first quarter, Eric Houston 27-yard field goal in the second then Albert Oyegun added a 17-yard touchdown run in third.

The only score for the Tigers (10-1) came when Sebry Nuru kicked a bad snap out of the end zone for a safety in the fourth.

"Playoff games always come down to a break here or there, and thank God the big breaks mostly fell our way," Godfrey said. "And whenever we got in serious trouble, our defense was there to save us."
