COLUMBUS - Pickens continued its surprise run in the Class AAA girls state softball tournament Thursday with two nail-biting wins at the Columbus Softball Complex.
The lone remaining Region 7-AAA team in the tournament beat Spalding County and then Blessed Trinity by identical 2-1 scores to move into Friday's semifinals. The Dragonettes, who have won five straight in the state playoffs, are one win from a berth in the state title game.
Pickens (24-15) will play No. 1 Oconee County at 5 p.m. Friday. The loser will play at 9:30 a.m. Saturday for a second shot at a berth in the championship round.
Oconee County, last year's Class AAA state champion, knocked off South Effingham 5-0 and then Central-Carroll 5-1 to advance to the semifinals.
In other Class AAA action Thursday, Blessed Trinity beat LaGrange 2-0 before falling to Pickens. Central-Carroll beat Columbus 5-1 before losing to Oconee.
Blessed Trinity will await the Columbus-South Effingham winner at 1 p.m. Friday. Central-Carroll will play the Spalding County-LaGrange winner at 1 p.m. in another elimination game.
Those winners will then meet at 5 p.m. in an elimination game.
