Lady Lions clinch share of first-ever subregion title

By By Jeff Hart
JEFFERSON - An Emily Horn steal and Chelsey Chastain layup with 9 seconds left lifted the Class A No. 6-ranked Lakeview Academy girls basketball team to a thrilling 44-43 win over No. 11 Jefferson Tuesday night.

The win assured the Lady Lions (17-5, 8-1 Region 8-A North) of at least a tie for the subregion crown, a first for the program. They can win it outright with a Towns County loss to Jefferson on Friday.

Lakeview closes out the season at home against Rabun Gap.

Chastain apparently loves to play against the Lady Dragons. She finished with 23 points and 9 rebounds. She had 28 points in Lakeview's first win over Jefferson two weeks ago.

The basket to give Lakeview the lead was the first and only of the game. The Lady Lions trailed by as many as eight most of the game but used a late run to get within one point, 43-42, with about a minute to go.

After the Horn-to-Chastain play, Jefferson turned the ball over and fouled but got the rebound on missed free throw and a desperation shot fell short to preserve the win.

Christi Thomas had 7 points and 10 rebounds while Dianna Briggs and Hannah Bennett each had 6 for Lakeview.

Shenita Moon led Jefferson with 15 points. Shalita Brooks added 10.
